2. Compilation of Information for CSDB

(1) Outline of CSDB

CSDB consists of two databases: the database for search and the database for literature reference.

The database for search contains the text information such as CS Terms, bibliographies, free keywords, contents and indexes, full texts of literature and their summaries.  The database for literature reference contains the image information of all pages of the literature.

Searches will be performed in combination of an index search by CS Terms, a free keyword search, and a full text search of bibliographies, contents and indexes, summaries and primary literature.

(2) Outline of CS Terms

Like F Terms (File Forming Terms) developed for the retrieval database of patent documents by the JPO, a CS Term is an index representing some concept.

CS Terms are designed to enable the retrieval of information difficult to search with the existing indexes such as International Patent Classification, and a CS Term search is a tool complementary to a keyword search and a text search.

CS Terms are comprised of 252 terms and are constructed with common aspects selected at higher level from among many software-related literature. In order to prevent a possible enormous expansion of number of terms, they do not pick up terms on a technology peculiar to one field.

Expecting that CS Terms will become international standards, the JPO has worked together with European Patent Office (EPO) and US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

(3) Including information on granted copyrights relating to external disclosure of CSDB

To prepare for disclosure of CSDB planned by JPO from FY2002, we are going to include information on copyrights granted to JPO for non-patent literature accumulated since FY2002 and convert them into computer-readable media

(4) Compilation of Information for CSDB

1) Collection of non-patent literature

Computer software manuals, business manuals, computer game software manuals, books, technical magazinesCnon-technical magazines, treatisesCcompaniesf technical reports, Organizational publications, dissertations for scientific societies and, if necessary, their back numbers are collected for CSDB.

General computer software-related literature, business-related literature and computer game software-related literature will be collected for CSDB for the fiscal year 2002 as the previous fiscal year.

2) Analysis of collected literature

gThe chief staffh of PIC select literature necessary to build CSDB among collected literature, and contracted outside analysts analyze selected literature.  Specifically, analysts read them carefully, assign CS Terms according to CS Terms Analysis Manual, pick up necessary free key words, and make their summaries.  gThe chief

staffh of PIC check the results of analyses.

However, dissertations for scientific societies are excluded from analysis.

37,900 analyses are scheduled for the fiscal year 2002 as the previous fiscal year.

3) Compilation of information on computer-readable media

With regard to analyzed literature selected from collected literature, CS Terms, free keywords, summaries, bibliography, contents and indexes are compiled into text information on computer-readable media.

4) Preparation status of compilation of information on computer-readable media

Year-on-year preparation status of compilation of information on computer-readable media is shown on the following table and the accumulated total at the end of the fiscal year 2002 (performance) has been almost 200,000 (planned value for 2003).
